Mount Barker Swimming Club

Our History

The Mount Barker Swimming Club started off as Mount Barker Amateur Swimming Club in 1957 when the club was officially established, marking the beginning of an enduring community institution.

In October 1961, a significant development occurred when the Mount Barker Amateur Swimming Club joined with the Mountain Pool Society. This union gave rise to a new identity: the Mountain Pool Amateur Swimming Club, a name that would carry the club through the decades that followed.

For over sixty years, under the name Mountain Pool Amateur Swimming Club, the club fostered generation of swimmers and played a vital role in local aquatic sport.

In 2024, in a move grounded in democratic tradition, the members voted to rename the club. Unbeknownst to many at that time, this change restored the club’s original name – Mount Barker Swimming Club – thus reconnecting with it’s roots and honouring the legacy of those who founded it nearly seven decades earlier.

Our Future

We are excited to announce that our swimming club has officially moved to our new training location – the Summit Aquatic and Leisure Centre.

This modern facility will offer our swimmers an exceptional environment to train, grown and thrive. With state of the art pools, updated amenities and a welcoming atmosphere, the Summit will provide everything we need to support both competitive excellence and community spirit.

We’re proud to be home to a dynamic and growing community of over 40 swimmers, ranging in age from 7 to 50+ years, and we’re always excited to welcome new members to our club.

We look forward to making new memories, building on our clubs strong foundation, and continuing to achieve great things together.

We are also pleased to introduce the Masters Swim membership to our club — a fantastic opportunity for adult swimmers of all levels to train, improve their technique, and enjoy the social and fitness benefits of swimming in a supportive team environment.

Our goal is to promote fitness, encourage participation in competitive swimming, celebrate achievements both big and small, and to ensure every member feels valued and part of the team.

Training

We’re proud to offer a flexible and comprehensive training program that caters to a variety of needs and schedules. Whether you’re an early riser or prefer evening sessions, we’ve got you covered.

Our structured training schedule includes a mix of morning and evening sessions, thoughtfully designed by our coaching team. Each session combines pool-based training to build technique and endurance, with dry land sessions focused on strength, mobility and injury prevention.

This balanced approach helps our swimmer develop all-round athleticism and reach their full potential, while also promoting team spirit and personal growth. No matter your goals or level of experience, there’s a session to suit you.

For the full training schedule please visit our ‘Training‘ page.

Competitions
There are a range of competitions and carnivals throughout the year in which swimmers can compete (not compulsory) – these include Interclub Meets, Open Carnivals, SA Country Championships and of course the Mountain Pool Club Championship day.
The more advanced swimmers can also compete at state and national level throughout the year.

Membership & Fees

We are always seeking new members, and interested swimmers are encouraged to come and try for free, for up to 1 month.

You should have basic skills in backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle (and butterfly is a bonus), as we provide coaching but not learn-to-swim lessons.

Our annual fees are very competitive and are charged pro-rata depending on month of joining the club, and our training fee’s are also based on the number of sessions attended per month.

Swimmers must also be registered with Swimming SA, and for children under 18 a parent must also register.

For more details please visit our pages under the ‘Full Membership‘ or ‘Trial Membership‘ menu.
